How to Clean Vomit from Your Sofa
Human or pet vomit is never fun to clean up but such incidents happen and it is good to be prepared for handling the cleaning. Here are the steps to follow to successfully clean vomit from your sofa and remove the nasty leftover odour:
Get your rubber gloves
Using rubber gloves makes the removal of the vomit more manageable. Use paper towels to blot away as much of the vomit as possible. Throw them directly into a plastic bag for easy disposal.
Mix same quantities of warm water and white vinegar and pour them into a spray bottle. In case the vomit has left a more serious stain you can add a few teaspoons of mild dish washing soap.
Remove the vomit
Spray the surface, or for more delicate upholsteries, dip the cloth in the mixture and apply it on the vomit stain by dabbing it. You may need to use a soft brush for some textures to remove the vomit stuck into the grooves and in between the fibres.
Gently rinse the spot
Rinse the soft white cotton cloth and again dip it into the solution and dab up all the vomit left. Repeat until you are satisfied with the results.
Rinse the treated area with a clean cloth dipped in clean water, so you get all the vinegar and detergent out of the upholstery. After you are done, use paper towels to get out as much of the water as possible, so that the sofa can dry quickly.
After it dries, sprinkle it with generous amounts of baking soda and let it sit overnight. Hopefully, when you hoover the baking soda off of the sofa, any bad odour will be long gone.
Important note: Remember that this cleaning method applies only if your sofa can be cleaned with water. Make sure you read any labels or codes for cleaning for your sofa before proceeding. It is also advisable to test the solution on a small spot on the upholstery somewhere out of sight so that you make sure that the textile doesn’t show any negative reactions to the solution first. Wait for at least 20 minutes to ensure that it is harmless before using it!
In some cases, especially for delicate upholstery, it is best to entrust the vomit stain removal and the deep cleaning process to a reliable cleaning company. They are equipped and experienced to deal with a wide variety of stains and upholstery materials.
